The engine was developed under the supervision of Aleksandr Ivchenko in the 1960s. The first flight using this engine was completed on 21 October 1966 with a Yak-40 passenger aircraft. The improved TL version was released in 1971. It was installed in the Czechoslovakian L-39 “Albatross” trainer aircraft used by the Hungarian Air Force.
