The AI-20M engine was developed by Aleksandr Ivchenko in the 1950s. Production in the Soviet Union started in 1958 and later it was also produced in China under licence. It arrived in Hungary with the Ilyushin Il-18 passenger aircraft acquired by Malév in 1960. Until jet aircraft became widely used these planes flew to Malév’s destinations outside of Europe.
