The Saphir-5 gas turbine helped to start the AI-25TL turbine of the L39 Albatross trainer aircraft. The Saphir was started by a simple electromotor. Once the aircraft’s engine reached the appropriate revolutions the electronics built into the fuel system turned off the Saphir.
The L-39 jet was developed in Czechoslovakia and completed its first flight in 1968. After the change of system the Hungarian Air Force received 24 of these trainer aircraft as a legacy from East Germany. Twenty of these were put into service and operated between 1995 and 2009.
