The first experimental model of the engine was completed in 1953 at the Soviet OKB-300 design bureau. Production only began in 1956 after several modifications and redesigns.
The RD-98 propelled the first supersonic Soviet fighter plane, the MiG-19. The engine arrived to Hungary with the MiG-19s in 1960 when the model was introduced in the Hungarian People's Army. 12 planes served at Taszár in the 31st Fighter Regiment until they were retired in 1974.
