The engine was based on the AI-14F engine, its development was directed by Ivan Vedeneyev. The manufacturing of the M-14, which continues to this day, began in Voronezh, where Vedeneyev later founded his own design bureau which continued to develop different versions of the engine. One of the versions is the M-14V-26, which was also used by the Hungarian Air Force in their Kamov Ka-26 courier and transport helicopters. Use of the model began in 1970 and a total of 24 served. They were retired in 1990.
